Chamber Recognizes Angela Powers
Deputy Commissioner at Senior Enrichment
as "Member of the Month"

Anyone who meets Angela Powers for the first time knows that she is a “no nonsense woman.” Short on words, but long on loyalty, hard work and commitment, Angela’s reputation often precedes her. She is a “get the job done” worker and leader. Be prepared to get an honest answer if you ask her opinion or don’t ask at all!

You might ask where this dynamic woman came from. She credits her father for her leadership ability. “When I was born, my father wanted a son; so he made me a general” she tells her male-dominated clubs, when she reaches the highest chair in their organization. “It’s true,” she proclaims. ”They never misunderstand that message, and they know I am taking charge!” she adds.

As a forty-year New Hyde Park resident, she is very proud of her children, Edward, Diane and Bruce. Angela calls them her “three professionals.” She had to be both father and mother to three teenagers as a single parent. Angela is very adept at changing when necessary. She had to learn the “iron fist in a velvet glove” method at home, and it came in handy out in the world. She is now enjoying the next generation of “professionals” with three grandchildren, Daniel, Matthew and Brian.

Angela’s advice to young women starting their careers today is to stay the course and don’t lose heart. Good communication skills, “being able to listen and incorporate other ideas into viable solutions,” have been the keys to her success

In fact as Deputy Commissioner at Senior Enrichment in the Town of Hempstead, she must heavily depend on those skills when she operates on a daily basis.

Ms. Powers had most of her sales and recruitment experience in the private sector; she has always maintained a high profile in the Chamber of Commerce and community service-oriented organizations. She was the first woman to be President of the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce.

The principles of the Republican Party have also served to shape, in some instances, her actions. As the Executive Leader of the Nassau Stewart Manor-New Hyde Park Area Republican Committee she lives by the “Golden Rule”. She maintains a deep and abiding faith as a practicing Roman Catholic which has kept her on course during hard times. Angela also holds an Associate Broker license with ERA Caputo Realty.

Ten years from now, Angela Powers can see herself in higher office in the field of public service. Just think, Angela was going to be a singer, but she knew it would interfere with a normal family life. “Women of my generation deferred to the benefit of the family, rather than the career,” she recalls. However, she never stopped singing. To this day she is known for her beautiful “a cappella” version of the National Anthem at public gatherings. She is a tradition in her community and around the county and state.
